Driveways take a beating, especially in a place like Cambridge where cars turn on tight frontages and pull off busy roads every day. Block paving has remained a favourite across the city for good reason. When laid properly over a solid bed, individual paviours handle everyday vehicle turning without cracking or breaking apart. From Victorian terraces near the city centre to newer detached properties out on the edge of town, block paving suits local brickwork without looking out of place.
At Right Choice Property Maintenance, our team brings twenty years of groundwork experience to every job. We know how Cambridge clay shrinks during dry summers and swells during wet winters, so we build our driveways specifically to handle that ground movement without shifting.

Any good paver will tell you that the blocks on top are only the finishing touch. What keeps a driveway level ten years down the line is the excavation and the aggregate underneath. As experienced block paving driveways installers, we do not cut corners on the dig-out. We dig down to a solid base, calculate the drainage slopes so rainwater cannot pool near your walls, and lay a heavy-duty geotextile membrane to stop the sub-grade mixing into the fresh stone.
On top of that, we compact MOT Type 1 crushed stone in distinct layers until it forms a rock-hard platform. Sharp sand is screeded across the stone, and the blocks are laid out by hand in your chosen design. We concrete the outer edge blocks firmly into place so the sides cannot spread when a car drives over them. Once the cuts are made, a heavy vibrating plate beds the blocks down, and dry silica sand is brushed deep into every joint to lock the whole driveway together.
One practical advantage of block paving over tarmac or a continuous concrete slab is that it can be taken apart and put back together. If a water pipe leaks under the drive or you want to trench an armoured cable for an electric car charger, we can lift a neat section of blocks, set them aside, and relay them afterwards without leaving a visible patch. We also fix older driveways that have started to dip where wheels stand, or where poor original groundwork let a section sink.
Our team lifts the sunken area, digs out the failed base, builds it back up with compacted stone, and sets the original blocks flush with the surrounding drive. If your paving simply looks weathered, our high-pressure cleaning gear clears out moss and ground-in tyre grime without blowing out the bedding layer. A fresh sweep of kiln-dried sand between the joints afterwards restores the joint friction and leaves the whole drive looking fresh again.
Every home has different parking needs, which is why our block paving services cover a wide selection of block types and layouts across Cambridgeshire. Standard fifty-millimetre concrete blocks handle typical family cars without issue, while sixty-millimetre pavers provide extra thickness for trade vans or heavier vehicles. Tumbled blocks give a softer, weathered edge that works well beside older properties, while hard-wearing clay pavers offer deep, natural colour that stays bright year after year without fading in the sun.
The laying arrangement makes a difference to both looks and durability. A forty-five degree herringbone bond is usually our top recommendation for parking areas because the interlocking pattern resists the scuffing force of power steering. We also install practical details like recessed manhole trays that hold matching blocks to hide utility covers, alongside neat drainage channels to keep surface water away from your front threshold.

Our paving team works across Cambridge and the surrounding villages every week. South of the city, we install block paved driveways for homeowners in Trumpington, Cherry Hinton, and Great Shelford. If you are situated to the north or west, we regularly work on driveways in Histon, Impington, Girton, and Milton.
Working in these areas week in and week out means we know the local planning rules on surface drainage and dropped kerbs, making sure your installation meets all building requirements while keeping your frontage clean and usable. For more information, visit our Areas We Cover page.
